(Des Moines, IA) – Officials with the Iowa Department of Transportation are warning residents about a resurgence in a texting scam that says you have unpaid costs for traffic tickets. The scam claims if you don’t pay your fine or fees by a certain date or time, your driving privileges will be suspended immediately, and your driver’s license will be invalid until the fine and court costs are paid.
The Iowa DOT says they NEVER send out fee collection reminders via text, and will never text customers asking for private or financial information.
If you receive a text message:
* DO NOT click on any links or provide personal or credit card information.
* Report and delete unwanted text messages.
Use your phone’s “report junk” option to report unwanted texts to your messaging app or forward them to 7726 (SPAM). Learn about the newest scam and what to do if you’re a victim of a text scam: https://iowadot.gov/…/fraudulent-text-messages-target…
