Iowa DOC selects Aaron Sharr as new warden in Clarinda

CLARINDA, Iowa — The Iowa Department of Corrections (DOC) has announced the appointment of Aaron Sharr as the new Warden of the Clarinda Correctional Facility (CCF).

Sharr served as the Deputy Warden at CCF, where he oversaw daily security, treatment, and maintenance operations while supporting institutional leadership and cross-functional teams. He brings more than two decades of experience in corrections, along with a distinguished 20-year career in the Iowa Army National Guard.

“I am genuinely humbled by my selection as CCF’s Warden and the trust placed in me by our leadership,” Sharr said. “I am excited to lead an incredible team that provides an integral service to the State of Iowa, our communities, and the incarcerated population. I am and will always remain incredibly proud of the work we do.”

Sharr began his career at CCF in 1999 as a Correctional Officer before serving in roles including Correctional Counselor, Treatment Services Director, Associate Warden of Treatment, and Deputy Warden. In these positions, he led efforts in institutional safety, treatment programming, staff supervision, and reentry-focused initiatives.

“Aaron’s leadership is defined by his steady commitment to both staff and the individuals in our care,” said Director Beth Skinner. “He understands the complexity of correctional operations and consistently leads with integrity, accountability, and a focus on long-term public safety outcomes. His experience at Clarinda and his deep roots in Iowa service make him exceptionally well-prepared to lead this facility into its next chapter.”

In addition to his corrections career, Sharr is a retired infantry officer with the Iowa Army National Guard, where he held leadership roles ranging from platoon-level command to Company Commander of a 170-soldier unit.

“I am thrilled to welcome Aaron to his new role as Warden at CCF,” said Deputy Director of Institutional Operations Marcy Stroud. “Aaron brings an exceptional depth of experience to this position. His vision for CCF centers on strengthening professional relationships, prioritizing the well-being of staff and incarcerated individuals, and enhancing public safety by reducing recidivism. Aaron’s unique 360-degree view of operations and his commitment to the Clarinda community make him an ideal leader to guide the facility toward long-term stability and excellence.”

As Warden, Sharr will oversee all operations at the Clarinda Correctional Facility, including security, treatment programming, reentry services, and facility administration. He is committed to strengthening professional relationships, supporting staff well-being, and advancing the DOC mission of enhancing public safety through effective correctional practices.

Sharr holds a Bachelor of Science in Public Administration with a minor in Psychology from Upper Iowa University.
