Gov. Reynolds orders flag lowered in honor and remembrance of state legislator Julian Garrett

DES MOINES—Governor Kim Reynolds has ordered flags in Iowa to be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Saturday, June 20, 2026, in honor and remembrance of Sen. Julian Garrett on the day of his funeral.

Garrett served in the Iowa Legislature for 16 years, first in the House from 2011-2013, then in the Senate through the 2026 legislative session. A farmer and an attorney, he also worked in the Iowa Attorney General’s Iowa Office. Senator Garrett died June 8, 2026, at the age of 85.

“Sen. Garrett was a friend who served our state with integrity–whether as a cattle producer, a Little League coach, an attorney in the executive branch, or a legislator. For 15 years, we worked together to unleash opportunities for the Iowans we served, and his impact will be felt for generations to come,” said Governor Reynolds.

Flags will be at half-staff on the State Capitol Building and on flag displays in the Capitol Complex. Flags will also be at half-staff on all public buildings, grounds and facilities throughout the state.

Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flag at half-staff for the same length of time as a sign of respect.
