Fatal aircraft crash under investigation in NW Iowa

(Woodbury County, IA) – Sheriff’s officials in northwest Iowa’s Woodbury County, Sunday afternoon, confirmed they had received a report a small, single-occupant private aircraft crashed Saturday evening in a rural part of the County, near the City of Lawton.

Officials began their search for the plane after receiving word at around 5 p.m. Saturday that the aircraft was overdue to arrive at its destination in Colorado. The pilot of the Zenith CH-64 died from his injuries in the crash. Family members (and FAA records obtained by KTIV in Sioux City) identified him as 64-year-old Dennis Elkins of Erie, Colorado. Elkins was flying home in the plane he built, after leaving an airshow in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

Emergency crews from multiple agencies initiated a search for the aircraft using available information.

The crash remained under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), along with local authorities. Additional information is expected to be released, sometime Monday afternoon.
