Superintendent Josh Rasmussen said in this meeting agenda notes: “The administration recommends that the Board approve submission of a Flexible Student and School Support Program (FS3) application to the Iowa Department of Education, requesting a waiver of the requirement that students in grades 9-12 participate in 180 minutes of physical activity each week.” The waiver allows AC/GC High School students to complete one-fourth until of physical education during one semester each school year.
Rasmussen says the request is being made due to implementation of the high school block schedule and resulting need for greater scheduling flexibility, while maintaining strong educational opportunities and student wellness support. Under next year’s block schedule, students will take PE every day for one-quarter of the semester, completing their PE requirements and allowing students more flexibility with their schedules. The FS3 program specifically allows districts to request exemptions from the State requirement to participate in 180 minutes of physical activity each week, when implementing innovative educational practices designed to improve student learning, well-being, and post-secondary readiness.
Both Boards will discuss the 2026-27 WGS Bill, and Guthrie Center parking lot striping.
