(Red Oak, IA) – A collision early this (Monday) afternoon in Red Oak resulted in two people being hurt. According to Red Oak Police, officers responded at around 12:132-p.m. to a single-vehicle accident near the intersection of South Broadway Street and 3rd Avenue. An investigation determined a 2018 Jeep Cherokee owned and operated by 81-year-old Ronald Paul Allen, of Clarinda, was traveling on S. Broadway Street, when Allen had some sort of a medical issue which caused him to pass out, and step on the accelerator.
The SUV left the road and struck a streetlight. The impact caused the vehicle to overturn before it hit several decorative trees planted along the boulevard. The Jeep came to rest upright, against a retaining wall. Ronald Allen was trapped inside the vehicle and had to be extricated by emergency personnel, who used hydraulic rescue equipment. The man suffered minor injuries.
His passenger, 82-year-old Phyllis Ann Allen, also of Clarinda, was able to exit the vehicle without assistance. She too, suffered minor injuries during the crash. Both were transported to the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital for evaluation and treatment of their injuries. The Jeep sustained about $15,000 in damage and was declared a total loss.
Damage to the street light and other property was estimated to be about $6,000 altogether. No citations were issued. Red Oak Police were assisted at the scene by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Red Oak Fire Department, Red Oak Rescue, the City of Red Oak Street Department, and Montgomery County Dispatch.
