Shelby County Fair underway through July 13th

(Harlan, IA) – It’s that time of year when counties in Iowa begin to hold their respective fairs, leading up to – and in some cases after – the big Iowa State Fair. In Harlan, the Shelby County Fair is underway now through July 13th. Among the activities on the schedule this week, on Tuesday, July 7th, is entering and judging of the 4-H Static Exhibits, and FFA Static Judging. The bulk of the events begin on Wednesday and culminate with the 4-H/FFA Livestock Auction at 5:30-p.m., Monday, July 13th.

Shelby County Youth Coordinator Jennifer Sellner says the theme for this year’s Fair is “Small Town Spirit, Big Fair Fun!,” and they’re looking forward to another great county fair.

Sellner said a lot of the youth are interested in the cake decorating events, for instance.

Communication events are designed to help youth build their communication skills in preparation for employment and/or college. No fair would be complete without 4-H & FFA Youth showing-off the animals they’ve been raising. Animals big and small are being entered, weighed and judged this week

Jennifer Sellner said this year, horses return to the show ring.

They will be checked-in Wednesday evening and judged late Saturday morning. Other, family friendly events include a number of entertainment options, such as the parade, Fair Queen Coronation, and on Friday, July 10th, there’s Bull Riding in the horse arena. The night will be capped-off by a concert from “Big Time Grain Co.,” featuring Dylan Gerard.
