IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Jason Wakenight has been named head coach of Team USA men’s and women’s track and field for the 2026 FISU America Games in Lima, Peru, July 30 to Aug. 1.
The FISU America Games are held every two years and are contested by athletes from North America, Central America, South America and the Caribbean. The Games were established in 2018.
Former Hawkeyes Majesty Tutson and Jim Warren will also be a part of Wakenight’s staff.
In his 12th season, Wakenight, Iowa’s long sprints, long hurdles and mid-distance coach, guided several Hawkeyes to the NCAA Championships. He coached both 4×400-meter relay teams to fifth-place finishes at the national outdoor meet. The Hawkeyes swept the Drake Relays team titles in 2026. At the NCAA Indoor Championships, Wakenight led the women’s 4×400 team to All-America status, a sixth-place finish and a school record. At the indoor Big Ten meet, Wakenight helped the men’s team to a third-place finish.
In the summer of 2021, Wakenight was a member of the Team USA coaching staff, leading the sprints, hurdles and relays at the World University Games in China.
All-American Terrick Johnson will be representing the Hawkeyes and competing in the 800 meters and 4×400 relay.
