Shellberg Earns Big Ten Honors

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa sophomore Ryan Shellberg was named a second-team All-Big Ten selection, the conference announced Wednesday.

Shellberg’s recognition follows a standout spring season highlighted by a victory at the Hawkeye Invitational on April 21. The Prosper, Texas, native captured individual medalist honors with a 10-under-par 206, marking the program’s 17th Hawkeye Invitational champion and the first since 2023. His performance included a second-round 65 (-7), tied for the 10th-lowest round in program history, and his 54-hole total ranks tied for 11th all-time.

Shellberg also earned Big Ten Golfer of the Week honors on April 9 after a runner-up finish at the Calusa Cup where he posted rounds of 68 (-4), 71 (-1), and 69 (-3). His 208 total in Naples stands as the best 54-hole score by a Hawkeye in tournament history.

Throughout the spring season, Shellberg recorded top 25 finishes in all four regular season tournaments. He tied for 18th at the Duck Invitational and opened the Colleton River Collegiate with back-to-back rounds of 68 (-4) and 69 (-3) to lead the field through 36 holes and finished in 19th.

Shellberg finished the regular season with a team-best 70.4 stroke average and a low round of 65, counting every round for the Hawkeyes this spring.

Sophomore Chance Rinkol was selected as a Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree and has earned the Sportsmanship Award in back-to-back seasons. This honor is presented to student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. The honorees must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the competition setting.
