Recap of Championship Saturday at the Iowa High School State Track and Field Championships

The third and final day at the Iowa High School State Track and Field Meet was Championship Saturday. Nine events were won by local area athletes and relay teams. It wasn’t just the champions, but the amount of medals that athletes from southwest Iowa produced. In the 1A Boys 800m Final, Collin Harder of AHSTW and Dawson Henderson of Riverside finished 2nd and 3rd. For Collin Harder, it was a personal best time of 1:54.83 and the final run of his high school career. Collin described how he used his experience in the 400m to help him in the 800:

It was another great race for Ada Hansen, who entered the 100m hurdles as the champion in both the 400m and 400 hurdles. She finished in 2nd in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.65. It was her fourth time on the podium, having placed third in the sprint medley earlier in the day. After taking 2nd, she talked about her race and her thought process during it:

It was a big day for the Riverside boys, who collected the most points over the weekend and earned the team title for Class 1A. Brody Henderson competed in the boys 1600m final, taking 6th place with a time 4:26.90 and tacked on a few more points for the Bulldogs boys. Henderson spoke first about how he felt during the race:

Riverside finished with an overall total of 51 points. Treynor also finished 3rd in Boys 2A, while St. Albert finished third in Girls 1A.

  • Treynor – Boys 2A Shuttle Hurdles and 4x100m
  • Titus Steng (Shenandoah) – Wheelchair 100m, 200m and 400m
  • Cauy Konz (Treynor) – 200m
  • Rylee Hemmingson (Treynor) – 100m Hurdles
