Northern Iowa’s Ben Jacobson resigns to become the coach at Utah State

Ben Jacobson has resigned as basketball coach at Northern Iowa to become the new head coach Utah State. Jacobson spent the past 20 seasons as UNI coach and led the Panthers to five trips to the NCAA Tournament, including a memorable run to the Sweet Sixteen in 2010. He is the all-time leader in wins for the school and the Missouri Valley Conference. The Panthers finished 23-13 this past season and lost to St. John’s in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament after winning the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.

Jacobson says he enjoyed his 20-year run as head coach.

Jacobson led the Panthers to four Missouri Valley regular season titles and five tournament championships.

Jacobson is excited about the potential at Utah State. The Aggies have made four straight trips to the NCAA Tournament and are moving from the Mountain West Conference to the new PAC-12 for the start of next school year.

Jacobson spent five years as an assistant coach for the Panthers before becoming a head coach and says spending the last 25 years at UNI allowed him to raise his family in one place.

Jacobson says he hopes his successor can take the UNI program to the next level.

Jacobson replaces Jerrod Calhoun at Utah State. He took the job at Cincinnati after leading the Aggies to the second round of the NCAA Tournament where they lost to Arizona.
