Drake Relays week opened with a record. American record holder KC Lightfoot cleared 19 feet, four and three-quarters inches to win the pole vault at the Jordan Creek Town Center in West Des Moines. The winning mark topped the record he set two years ago.

Lighfoot says the competitors enjoy the crowd and the loud music that is part of the event.
Reigning US Indoor Champion Zach Bradford finished second. The women’s competition came down to a duel between the world’s top two ranked vaulters as two-time Olympian Sandi Morris edged former Olympic gold medalist Katie Moon. Morris posted a winning mark of 15 feet, seven inches.
Morris has been a Drake regular and has won five pole vault titles in the stadium.
Morris says it was a good early season test.
