Johnson Earns B1G Field Athlete of the Week for Second Time

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa junior Ryan Johnson was named the Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week for the second consecutive week, the league announced on Wednesday afternoon.

After opening his outdoor campaign two weeks ago with a win and school record at the Jim Duncan Invitational, Johnson returned to action with an even better performance to win the hammer throw at the Big Red Classic on Apr. 17.

The Springboro, Ohio, native launched a personal-best 77.64-meter throw to win the event in Lincoln. Two of the throws in his series eclipsed the 76-meter mark. His updated lifetime best sailed nearly two meters over his previous record of 75.75 meters from the Jim Duncan Invite on Apr. 10.

Johnson’s new mark kept him atop the Big Ten and at No. 2 in the NCAA and West Region. He and the Hawkeyes are back in action at the Drake Relays this weekend. Johnson is slated to compete in the WACT Men’s Hammer Throw on Thursday evening.
