Iowa State adds women’s wrestling and changes leadership of men’s program

It was a big day for wrestling announcements at Iowa State. The school is adding women’s wrestling as its 18th sport. It comes after the school dropped its women’s gymnastics program.

That’s athletic director Jamie Pollard who says women’s wrestling was chosen as the new sport over flag football.

Alli St. John was named the coach of the women’s program that begins competing in 2027. She was a two-time world silver medalist as a competitor and the wife of ISU men’s assistant coach Derek St. John.

St. John on her goals for the program.

After spending the last nine years as Iowa State’s wrestling coach, Kevin Dresser is turning in his whistle to become the director of both programs.

Dresser led the Cyclones to the 2024 Big 12 title and a fourth place finish that season at the NCAA Championships. Veteran Cyclone assistant Brent Metcalf becomes head coach of the men’s program.

Metcalf says the goal is to build upon what Dresser accomplished.
