Bryce Hawthorne is stepping into a leadership role for the Iowa defensive line during summer workouts. The former South Dakota State transfer played in all 13 games and made one start last season. He is the most experienced member of a defensive line that was hit hard by graduation.
Hawthorne says with new players up front comes a new identity.
Several transfers joined the team in spring to bolster the defensive line.
Hawthorne says while the faces are new the expectations of defensive line coach Kelvin Bell remain the same.
The Hawkeyes open the season at home on September fifth against Northern Illinois.
