(Atlantic, IA) – The Atlantic School Board during their meeting Wednesday evening, approved the addition of Bowling to the 2026-27 Athletic Program. Athletic Director Andy Mitchell said he was approached by a couple of students last fall, about what it would take to add bowling to the program.
Mitchell said “The great thing about bowling is bowling often reaches a kid who’s not out for another sport right now.”
He said Dan Duskin, owner of the Super Bowl in Atlantic, is “super excited about the possibility” of having a bowling program in the school district. Duskin, according to Mitchell, said for this first year, the District won’t be charged for practice sessions, just meets.
Mitchell said they would have to conduct fundraising efforts to offset some of the costs of the program. The bowling season begins in the Winter, with girls starting two-weeks before the boys, to accommodate State Bowling activities in Waterloo. A team is comprised of four-to-five kids to score, and there are individual opportunities as well.
As far as equipment is concerned, kids who have already been bowling for years will most likely have their own bowling balls, bag and shoes, Mitchell said. For others, the house (host bowling alley) bowling balls and shoes can be used.
The sport is be under the domain of the Hawkeye 10 Conference. There are already 10 events scheduled for the upcoming season, according to Andy Mitchell.
