Settlement reached between Iowa school district, teacher who faced termination over Charlie Kirk social media posts

(Creston, IA) – KCCI-TV in Des Moines reports a settlement has been reached in a lawsuit between a Creston teacher and the school district over social media posts she made following Charlie Kirk’s death.

As previously reported, Creston High School English teacher Melisa Crook sued the district last year after she faced termination over a social media comment regarding Kirk’s death. She claimed her First Amendment rights were violated.

KCCC says new court filings say Creston High School English teacher Melisa Crook will receive $145,000 and full benefits. The Creston Community School District also must distribute a public statement regarding “respect for the diverse opinions, beliefs, and affiliations that exist among our staff, students and families.”

In addition to the $145,000, Crook will also receive her salary and benefits for the 2025-26 school year, totaling over $82,000. She will not return to the district after this school year.
