(Red Oak, IA) – The driver of a van complained of pain and unknown injury, but was not transported to the hospital, following a single-vehicle accident this (Wednesday) afternoon at 7th and Corning Streets, in Red Oak. According to the Red Oak Police report, a tree branch fell down and struck a MidAmerican power line connected to a power pole at the northeast corner of the intersection. The incident happened at around 3:30-p.m.
Authorities say the impact of the tree branch caused the power pole to fall onto, and block the roadway. Shortly afterward, the driver of the 2011 Chrysler Town & Country van, 67-year-old Penny Torczon, of Red Oak, was approaching the intersection traveling west on Corning Street. When she failed to see the power pole blocking the road, her van drove over the power pole, causing an estimated $2,000 (minor) damage to the vehicle, which was driven away from the scene.
The Red Oak Police and Fire Departments, along with MidAmerican Energy, blocked-off the roadway until the debris could be cleared from the scene.
