Poweshiek County authorities search for a man armed with a large knife who was involved in a stand-off

(Montezuma, IA) – The Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office, early this (Monday) morning, posted on social media that they were searching for a man who had been involved in a stand-off, and was armed with a large kitchen knife. Authorities say Michael Zurek is wanted on an active warrant, and should not be approached, if located. Instead, residents in the area were asked to call 911 immediately.

The Sheriff’s Office says deputies were called at around 6-p.m. Sunday to a residence in the 500 block of N. Front Street in Montezuma, for a report of a subject with an active arrest warrant. They made contact with Michael Zurek, who fled on foot armed with the knife, into a wooded area in the southwest part of Montezuma, where deputies lost visual contact with him.

Approximately 20 officers from the Poweshiek, Jasper, Mahaska and Iowa County Sheriff’s Offices, along with the Iowa State Patrol, and emergency personnel responded to the call for assistance. A perimeter was established and a large wooded area was searched on foot, and through the use of drones, but as of the latest information available, Zurek had not been located, and is considered to be armed and dangerous.

When he is apprehended, new charges will be filed in connection with this incident, in addition to his arrest on the warrant.
