Pedestrian struck and killed on I80 in central IA Friday morning

(Poweshiek County, IA) – (UPDATE) A male pedestrian who was struck by a semi tractor-trailer on Interstate 80 early this (Friday) morning in central Iowa, has died. According to the Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office, they received a 911 call at around 1:30-a.m. from a motorist traveling east on I-80 near mile marker 198 (about a mile from the Brooklyn Exit), about a man standing on the fog line. While deputies were responding, they located a semi tractor-trailer parked on the shoulder in the same area.

The driver said he believed he had struck something in the road. A search of the area resulted in the discovery of a man’s body in the ditch. Authorities say the man who was apparently struck by the semi, died at the scene. His body was transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Ankeny for autopsy and identification. At this time, authorities say, the man’s identity is unknown, and no other details are being released.

The driver of the semi, a 33-year-old man from Fridley, MN, was not injured in the collision, which remained under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol. Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office & EMS, along with the Brooklyn Fire Department, and Iowa Department of Transportation.
