Officer-involved Shooting under investigation in Red Oak

(Red Oak, IA) – Officials with the Red Oak Police Department, early this (Thursday) afternoon, released information with regard to an Officer-involved shooting incident. In a press release, authorities said Officers with the Red Oak P-D were dispatched at around 7:54-p.m. Wednesday, to 905 Highland Avenue, in Red Oak, for a requested welfare check.

Upon arrival, Officers made contact with the sole occupant of the residence. The individual exited the residence and fired multiple rounds from a handgun in the direction of a Red Oak Police Officer, who was positioned a short distance away. The suspect then raised the handgun in an apparent attempt to fire additional shots at the officer. In response to the immediate and ongoing threat, authorities say a Red Oak Police Officer discharged his weapon, striking the suspect and stopping the threat.

Emergency medical personnel from the Red Oak Fire and Rescue Department on the scene provided medical treatment to the person who was shot. The individual was then transported to the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital and later flown to the UNMC in Omaha for further treatment. As of the latest report, the suspect was in stable condition. Red Oak Police were assisted at the scene by Deputies with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.m

Officials say the identity of the officer involved in the incident, along with the suspect’s name, are not being released at this time, due to the ongoing investigation. Additional information will be released, authorities say, as it becomes available and as permitted by law.

The incident remains under investigation by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI).
