McCann was taken into custody in Adair County at approximately 5:19 P.M. Thursday, May 7, 2026, following a warrant issued out of Guthrie County for his arrest. He was transported to the Guthrie County Jail in Guthrie Center, and held. A No Contact Order was also issued.

As this remains an active criminal case, no additional information will be released at this time. Criminal charges are merely accusations, and all defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

McCann – who was a school counselor in the Atlantic School District – was fired by the District in March, 2026, following an investigation into alleged inappropriate messages he sent, and allegedly engaged in inappropriate conduct toward, at least one student. The district also found McCann failed to keep a safe and professional learning environment.

Atlantic Police said they were investigating McCann, but to date, no criminal charges have been filed in Cass County.
