Roundabout planned for U-S 59/IA Hwy 2 near Shenandoah

AMES, Iowa – April 9, 2026 – The Iowa Department of Transportation invites you to join their staff in discussing a planned roundabout near Shenandoah. The DOT says the change means the current intersection with stop signs will be reconstructed into a roundabout. During construction, the intersection will close for approximately 60 days and traffic will be detoured. Construction is expected to start spring or summer of 2027.

The Open House to talk about the Roundabout will take place April 16th between 4:30-and 6-p.m., in the Bricker Room at the Shenandoah Fire Department (400 W. Sheridan). During the Open House, you will be provided with information about the project, and you can talk through your thoughts with DOT staff. There will be no formal presentation.

The meeting space is accessible for people with disabilities. If you require more support at the meeting, please notify the contact listed below by April 13, 2026. You’re asked to share your thoughts by April 29th.

Why a roundabout? The DOT says:

It makes crashes less severe by preventing dangerous side-impact (T-bone) collisions.

You won’t have to wait for a gap in U.S. 59 traffic, making travel easier and safer.

The roundabout is designed for big vehicles like semis and farm equipment so everyone can get through smoothly.
