Former Atlantic Area Chamber of Commerce Director Bailey Smith has been ordered by the court to pay $12,749.72 in restitution to the Chamber. Court officers filed the order on October 15th after a prior restitution hearing.
Smith pleaded guilty to theft in the first degree and unauthorized use of a credit card over $10,000 on June 26th and was sentenced on August 17th to 10 years probation and restitution.
Court records show that Smith admitted to misappropriating Chamber property and making a number of personal transactions using Chamber of Commerce funds over a five-year period. She also used Chamber credit cards without authorization and Smith acknowledged more than $6,000 in personal expenses had been charged.
The court found evidence evidence of $1,113.14 in personal expenses on one credit card, $2,103.95 on a separate card, retail purchases of $7,032.82 as well as food and drink purchases of $652.30. The court also found evidence of $1,847.51 in personal expenses received through reimbursement checks from the Chamber.
No late fees or interest charges were included in the total. The court ruling says there was not enough information to determine which charges were involved in the fraudulent purchases or how to divide costs between the accounts.
