(Atlantic, IA) – The Atlantic High School Band will present the world premiere of a newly commissioned concert band work, Fields in Motion, this Sunday, in honor of the late Dr. Eric Johnson, who passed away this past summer.
The piece was commissioned collaboratively by Atlantic High School Band Director Jarrod O’Donnell and Denison High School Band Director Ruben Newell. Dr. Johnson was a mentor to both of them during their early days as teachers in Atlantic. The composition was written by Gavin Lendt, a former student of Dr. Johnson, as a tribute to his mentor’s lasting influence as an educator, musician, and inspiration to generations of students.
Fields in Motion reflects Dr. Johnson’s passions beyond the classroom, particularly his love of trains and automobiles. Through its musical imagery and momentum, the work captures both motion and memory—symbolizing a life that was always moving forward while leaving a lasting impression on those around him.
Dr. Johnson’s legacy as a teacher and musician continues to resonate throughout the region and beyond. Known for his dedication to students and his commitment to excellence in music education, he shaped countless young musicians and colleagues during his career.

The premiere performance of Fields in Motion will take place at Patty Hannon Memorial Concert, April 26th, 3:30 pm, in the Atlantic High School Auditorium, performed by the Atlantic High School Band. The concert will serve as both a musical milestone and a meaningful tribute to Dr. Johnson’s enduring legacy.
