(Schleswig, IA) On April 8, 2026, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office responded to Schleswig to continue efforts in searching for Darren Stearns, who had been reported missing on April 7, 2026.
While searching his last known address, a deputy attempted to open an upstairs bedroom door and was met with a response from a male subject, identified as Darren Stearns, stating he had a gun and to leave the area. At 7:17 p.m., the deputy alerted the communications center to the situation and requested assistance. At some point, Darren moved two dressers and other items in front of the door and barricaded himself in the room.
Additional officers arrived, established a perimeter, and attempted communication with the individual inside the residence. Family members at the location made extended efforts to resolve the situation peacefully. When communication with Darren broke down, entry was made into the barricaded room.
Once inside, Darren was found deceased. A preliminary investigation indicates the individual died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. No law enforcement officers discharged their weapons during the incident.
No other injuries were reported, and the scene was cleared at 12:58 a.m.
Out of respect for the individual and their family, no further details will be released at this time.
Assisting agencies included Schleswig Fire, Kiron Fire/Ambulance, and Crawford County EMA.
