Sixty percent of Mills County voters have approved an initiative to expand the county’s board of supervisors from three to five members. Mills County Supervisor Jack Sayers favors the move.
A portion of Council Bluffs is in Mills County and the entire county is considered to be part of the Omaha metro. Sayers spoke at a forum last week in Malvern, and suggested there’s a way for the county to save money by moving from three to five supervisors — by cutting the salaries for supervisors in half.
The proposal to lower salaries and benefits for five supervisors is expected to pass with the support of Sayers and a newly-elected Mills County supervisor who will be sworn into office in January. Expanding the board from three to five supervisors won’t happen until after the 2028 election. In 2022, TAMA County voters expanded their board of supervisors and it’s had five members for the past two years — but this week Tama County voters reversed that decision and the board will go back to three members in 2029.
