John Deere shifting production as two Iowa plants face closure

By Mark Dorenkamp (Brownfield)

John Deere has announced plans to close two manufacturing plants in Iowa before 2030.

Deere says it will shutter its Ottumwa Works in 2028, moving production of windrowers to the Des Moines Works facility by the end of fiscal year 2027 and round baler production by the end of fiscal ’28.

Deere also intends to move production of Hagie STS self-propelled sprayers from Clarion to a factory in Louisiana sometime in 2029.

Deere says the closures are intended to align manufacturing capacity with customer demand, improve operational efficiency, and manage costs.

The announcement comes a week after Deere said it plans to hire more than 400 workers across its factories and recall more than 275 employees at its Waterloo, Iowa facility.
