Iowa Insurance Division Sting Leads to Restitution and Probation in Elder Fraud Scheme

DES MOINES, IA — An investigation by the Iowa Insurance Fraud Bureau, conducted in coordination with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, has culminated in a deferred judgment, probation, and substantial restitution order against a courier involved in a multi-state elder fraud operation.

On October 28, 2026, the Polk County District Court sentenced 28-year-old Ali Mohammed Murtuza Syed of Chicago, Illinois. The court accepted Syed’s plea to Conspiracy to Commit a Non-Forcible Felony and ordered him to pay $83,763.42 in restitution to the victims.

The joint investigation originated in October 2025 after an elderly Grimes couple reported being targeted by a financial fraud scheme that had already stripped them of substantial savings. Investigators intervened during an active extortion attempt, organizing an undercover sting operation. Law enforcement arrested Syed on-site after he arrived at the victims’ residence to retrieve a lockbox containing $73,620 worth of gold coins.

“Physical courier pickups represent an increasingly aggressive tactic used by organized scam rings targeting seniors,” said Matt Mortvedt, Bureau Chief for the Iowa Insurance Division’s Fraud Bureau. “These networks rely on deceptive communications to induce panic and dispatch local or out-of-state runners to secure cash and precious metals before victims realize they are being defrauded.”

The Iowa Insurance Fraud Bureau urges all Iowans—particularly older adults and their families—to exercise extreme caution regarding:
• Deceptive Pop-Up Warnings: Urgent computer screen prompts claiming device compromise or compromised financial accounts.
• Government and Tech Support Impersonation: Callers falsely identifying themselves as federal agents, legal authorities, or major tech companies instructing targets to transfer funds.
• In-Person Couriers: Demands to withdraw cash, purchase gold or bullion, and surrender assets directly to a driver or courier service. Legitimate financial institutions and law enforcement agencies will never send a courier to retrieve funds.

Residents who suspect they or a loved one have been targeted by financial exploitation are urged to contact local law enforcement or file a report with the Iowa Insurance Division Fraud Bureau at 515-654-6464.
