The top Republican in the U-S House says two congressional races in Iowa are nailbiters. House Speaker Mike Johnson spoke at the Westside Conservative Club in Urbandale early this (Wednesday) morning.
Johnson noted that only twice in the past 90 years has the party of the sitting president gained seats during a mid-term election.
Johnson suggests first district Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks is seeking reelection in one of those swing districts and he says third district Congressman Zach Nunn’s campaign for a third term is one of the three most competitive House races in the country.
Nunn told the crowd of Republican activists to ignore the polls in his race against Sarah Trone Garriott, his Democratic opponent.
The crowd then cheered Nunn, the House speaker and four other congressmen who are House committee chairs donned aviator sunglasses and posed for a picture. Johnson and Nunn reminded the crowd of tax cuts approved last year and President Trump’s border policies.
Johnson will campaign in 21 other congressional districts this week. In early October, he headlined a Davenport rally with Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks.
