Republican U-S Senate candidate Ashley Hinson says she would support annual increases in federal funding of cancer research — and she’s proposed a new federal tax on imported tobacco products, with the revenue to go toward pediatric cancer research. Hinson is the latest Iowa candidate to meet with the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Action Network. Hinson told the group she’s concerned about smoking’s link to lung cancer and she would support federal funding for programs that discourage people from smoking — and help smokers quit.
Hinson says federal funding to support research into cures for cancer should not be spent on indirect costs like administrative staff.
Hinson says her grandmother and two aunts died of cancer. Josh Turek, the Democrat running for the U-S Senate, met with members of the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Action Network last month and told the group his grandmother died of cancer, his father has been treated for two types of cancer and his sister has recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. Turek says he’d vote to increase funding for cancer research and for Medicaid, the government funded insurance program that many cancer patients rely upon.
