Healthy Cass County to Discuss Making Healthy Food More Accessible

ATLANTIC, Iowa — What does it take to make healthy food truly accessible to everyone in Cass County?

Healthy Cass County invites community members, organizations, businesses, schools, food producers, and other local partners to join that conversation at its next meeting on Monday, October 12, at noon at the Cass County Community Center, 805 W. 10th Street in Atlantic.

The October meeting will focus on Food Equity: Making Healthy Food Accessible to All and will take a closer look at the barriers that can make it difficult for individuals and families to access nutritious food.

Those barriers can look different for everyone. For some, cost may be the biggest challenge. For others, it may be transportation, knowing where to find resources, limited access to fresh foods nearby, or simply having the time and tools needed to prepare healthy meals.

Cass County already has many organizations and community efforts working in this space, including food pantries, farmers markets, local food producers, schools, healthcare organizations, community gardens, and programs connecting residents with food and nutrition resources. The meeting will provide an opportunity to better understand what is already available, where gaps remain, and how these efforts can better connect and support one another.

The conversation also directly supports the 2026–2028 Cass County Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP). Healthy eating and active living was identified as one of Cass County’s top health priorities through the Community Health Assessment, making access to healthy food an important part of improving the overall health of the county.

Community members are encouraged to attend and share their perspectives. Attendees are also welcome to extend this invitation to others who might find interest in this topic.
