Groups pushing to get sales tax for conservation trust fund

Iowa conservation groups are pushing lawmakers to enact a sales tax for Iowa’s Water and Land Legacy trust fund. Conservationist and writer Dan Cohen says voters approved a constitutional amendment creating the fund in 2010.

The three-eighths cent sales tax would raise more than 200 million dollars for the fund. Cohen has held meetings in Black Hawk, Webster, Polk and Jasper counties. He visits Linn and Johnson next. Black Hawk County Conservation director Mike Hendrickson says they hope voters will pressure political candidates on the issue.

Both gubernatorial candidates say they’re in favor of funding the trust. Money could go to things like water quality, park, and wildlife projects.
