Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley says he’d be willing to make a promise to help calm fears about the potential for federal interference in next week’s election. A bipartisan group of lawmakers is seeking written pledges from colleagues that the midterm results will be accepted, and if Democrats or Republicans who don’t support Trump win, they will be allowed to take office in January.
The Wall Street Journal reports the group is asking other lawmakers to sign a public letter “opposing efforts to undermine free and fair elections or override the will of the voters,” which includes any attempt to refuse or delay the seating of any member of the House or Senate. Grassley says he’d take the pledge, even though the election results will be backed by long-standing laws.
The pledge is being spearheaded by Republican Representative Don Bacon of Nebraska and Josh Gottheimer, a New Jersey Democrat. Gottheimer told the Journal he was in the House chamber during the violence of January 6th and “it’s worth taking this extra measure.”
