A 27-year-old man faces four charges of attempted murder for allegedly shooting into three vehicles on Interstate-35 about 15 miles south of Des Moines — prompting a stretch of the interstate to be closed for over eight hours.
People started calling 9-1-1 around 3:30 Monday afternoon, reporting a driver was firing a gun in the northbound lanes of Interstate 35, near the Bevington exit. Witnesses say Andrew Tanaka of West Des Moines shot into the driver’s side windows of two other vehicles — one driver was hit in the left shoulder — then he rear ended a sedan. When the occupants got out of the car to check on him, Tanaka got out of his vehicle and fired at least one shot into the sedan’s windshield. Officers arrested Tanaka along the interstate, a couple of miles from the crash, and they say Tanaka had a gun and told them he — quote — “had to kill people.”
