The Atlantic FFA chapter competed in the Southwest Iowa District Soils Judging Contest at the Armstrong Research Farm in Lewis on Wednesday, September 22nd. Atlantic FFA had 4 individuals compete as a team. Which consisted of Willow Drake, Tenley Cappel, Tiegan Daniel and Jailynne Castillo placed 9th out of 60 teams.
FFA teams from 26 chapters, including more than 100 individuals participated in this year’s Career Development Event designed to provide the student an opportunity to display their agricultural knowledge and skills in the area of Soils Evaluation.
The Soils Evaluation Career Development Event included the evaluation of four soil pits, plus a written exam about soils in Iowa. The score card used to judge the soil pits is divided into five parts: Surface Features, Soil Features –The Profile, Land Capability Classification and Productivity Potential, Evaluation of Management Practices, and Sustainability of Soils for Non-Agricultural Uses.
After the contest took place, Tiegan Daniel said, “Don’t stress it, just look at the ground in front of you and have fun.” Tenley Cappel said, “There is a lot more to the contest than just looking at dirt. You really have to think about all the possible use for soil.”
