The Iowa Department of Public Safety has released more information on the shooting death Tuesday of a woman in Stuart and the wounding of a state trooper.
Officers responded to reports of shots fired at 3:35 p-m in Stuart. State Trooper Chase Carruthers was among the first to arrive and found 46-year-old Austin Reed armed with a shotgun. Officers say Reed shot Carruthers before he was arrested. Forty-two-year-old Toni Salazar was found dead outside the residence.
Trooper Carruthers was taken to a Des Moines hospital where he is in stable condition and is receiving ongoing medical treatment.
Witnesses identified Austin Reed as the person who shot Salazar, and he is charged with first-degree murder in her death and attempted murder of a police officer.
