The Iowa Environmental Protection Commission has extended a conseravation program for the Three Mile and Twelve Mile Lakes in Union County. The lakes are used for drinking water for the Southern Iowa Rural Water Association and Creston. The D-N-R’s Steve Konrady (Kon-rad-EE) says the program provides funds to a boost the capacity to manage issues in the watershed.
Konrady says the cedar trees grow close to the ground and create a huge area of bare soil beneath them that can be washed away in the rain.
Konrady says they want to remove the cedar trees and replace them with something better, like an oak savanna. He says the cedar trees they remove can be used to help the lakes.
The E-P-C approved funding not to exceed 160-thousand dollars for the program and Konrady says there is the potential to extend it if more work is needed.
