Cass County Supervisors approve Landus’ for installation of an additional anhydrous tank

(Atlantic, IA) – The Cass County Board of Supervisors, during their meeting this (Tuesday) morning, in Atlantic, received a request from a representative of the Landus Cooperative northeast of Atlantic, for permission to install a 90,000 gallon anhydrous ammonia tank neat to their existing 72,000-gallon tank at the facility located at 73751 650th Street.

Kasey Harken – Capital Projects Lead for Landus – addressed the Board. He said tremendous demand for the product is the reason for the request.

Harken said the 90,000 gallon tank would be installed on the west side of the existing tank on the site of the Wickman Chemical building. He said the proposed additional tank and its placement meets all IDALS (Iowa Dept. of Agriculture and Land Stewardship) setback requirements, and they have received verbal approval from IDALS to proceed with the application process.

Harken said they designed the facility to hold both the 72k gallon and possible 92k gallon tank, when they first attained the Wickman Chemical property, so an additional variance was not necessary. The Board approved the request unanimously.

In other business, the Supervisors approved the resignation from the Cass County Veteran’s Affairs Commission, of Christine Short, and, the appointment of Brenda Williams to the Cass County Zoning Commission. The Board acknowledged receipt of a Zoning Commission recommendation to deny an application for a zoning change by John Mark Topham – from General Ag to Light Industrial, but tabled action on setting the date of a public hearing on the recommendation, until more information is available. The site was the scene of recent large fire that took several departments and numerous hours to fight.
