(Atlantic, IA) – The Cass County Board of Supervisors, Tuesday (today), meet in a regular session and approved matters pertaining to the County Secondary Roads Department. That included a request by County Engineer Trent Wolken to fill a vacancy for an Operator 1 position at the Atlantic Shed.
The starting wage is $26.61/hour. Board Chair Steve Baier mentioned the replacement position is critical for Department efficiency, according to Wolken. If the position isn’t filled, Wolken said, it would leave the Atlantic District one-person short, and require some shuffling of manpower and equipment.

The Board also approved the purchase of an acre of land near the current maintenance shed near Anita for an expansion of the facility. The land is located just north of the existing maintenance shed site. The price-tag is around $20,000.
The motion included the purchase of about one-half acre of land for the Griswold Maintenance District shed. Wolken then updated the Board on Secondary Roads Department Maintenance and Activities, which includes the moving of contract rock.
He said four bridges are being worked on for letting, mostly late the Summer or early Fall. Secondary Roads crews are also handling some road patch work.
The Board received also, a monthly report from Cass/Guthrie County Deputy Director of Emergency Preparedness and Environmental Health Specialist Kent Irwin. He said water (Well) and Radon tests are popular right now. He said people are also interested in testing for Nitrates in well water.
