Cass County Coalition for Mental Wellness Invites First Responders to Share Experiences with Mental Health Crisis Response

The Cass County Coalition for Mental Wellness invites local law enforcement, EMS personnel, firefighters, dispatchers, probation and parole professionals, and other first responders to participate in a listening session on Monday, November 9, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. at the Cass County Community Center in Atlantic.

First responders are often on the front lines when individuals experience a mental health crisis. Their firsthand experiences provide valuable insight into the challenges of responding to these situations, navigating available resources, and connecting individuals with appropriate care.

The purpose of this listening session is to better understand the challenges first responders face, identify gaps in mental health crisis services, and explore opportunities to strengthen collaboration and support throughout Cass County.

“We aren’t coming to this meeting with all the answers. We are coming to listen,” said Grace McAfee, Community Wellness Coordinator. “Those responding to mental health crises firsthand have experiences and perspectives that are incredibly valuable. We want to understand what is working, where challenges exist, and how we can work together to better support both our first responders and the individuals they serve.”

The coalition especially encourages participation from individuals working both daytime and overnight shifts, recognizing that available resources and response challenges may differ depending on the time of day.

This listening session is part of the coalition’s ongoing efforts to identify gaps in mental health care, particularly during crisis situations and transitions between services. Information gathered will help guide future discussions, partnerships, and efforts to improve mental health crisis response in Cass County.
