Cass County Auditor to conduct an Administrative Audit of a voting tabulation machine

(Atlantic, IA) – The Cass County Board of Supervisors held a brief, Special Meeting this (Friday) morning Atlantic. During the meeting, the Board heard from Cass County Auditor Kathy Somers, with regard to a request for an Administrative Audit of the Tuesday, June 2nd Primary Election, as it pertains to Atlantic’s 3rd Precinct, at the Cass County Community Center.

Somers said a discrepancy was discovered between the voting tabulation machine count of the ballots for that Precinct, and the follow-up hand verified count.

Whenever there is a discrepancy, the County is required by Iowa Code to conduct an Administrative Audit to learn why there was a “missing ballot.”

The missing ballot could have been by someone who walked-off with it,without inserting it into the tabulation machine, but the hand count at the end of the night Tuesday, accounted for all 119 ballots.

The discrepancy did not affect the results for winners of the election. During the Administrative Audit, they will use the same machine to see if it miscounts the ballots. The Supervisors authorized Somers to conduct the machine Audit, as requested.
