Court records show an Avoca man who was charged with attempted murder in October 2025 has accepted a plea deal. 29 year old Shaun McCarthy pleaded to guilty to amended charges of Reckless Use of Firearm – Bodily Injury and three counts of child endangerment in July. Three other charges were dropped as part of the plea arrangement.
On August 20th, McCarthy was sentenced to two years of probation and was ordered to pay restitution to the victim. The court also ordered that the no contact order with the victim will remain in place for five years.
McCarthy was arrested in October of 2025 by Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s deputies following a shooting and brief standoff in Avoca. McCarthy was originally charged with Attempted Murder, Willful Injury – Causing Bodily Injury, Going Armed with Intent, Reckless Use of Firearm, and three counts of Child Endangerment.
