Atlantic’s Planning & Zoning Commission to act on recommendations for Stand-Along garages, Shouses and Barndominiums

(Atlantic, IA) – The City of Atlantic’s Planning & Zoning Commission is set to meet this coming Tuesday at 5:30 P.M., Tuesday, July 14th. City Administrator John Lund says the Commission will be moving forward on Zoning Ordinances, Articles 10 through 14, by reviewing, discussing and voting to recommend, a final version of the draft updates for Commercial and Industrial Zoning, to the full City Council.

Lund says the Commission will also review, discuss and issue a recommendation to the Council, with regard to the definition of “Shouses” and “Barndominiums.” According to online sources, a “Shouse,” or a shop plus a house, is a hybrid building that combines a large, commercial-grade workshop or garage, with a residential living quarters, under one roof or industrial shell steel or pole-barn construction.

Whereas a “Barndominium,” is a versatile, barn-style structure that combines residential living space with a utility area, such as a workshop, garage or stable, under a single roof. They are typically constructed using a metal-frame or post-frame (pole barn) method, and feature open, customizable floor plans and durable exteriors.

The Atlantic Planning and Zoning Commission meeting will be held in the Council’s Chambers inside the Atlantic City Hall building.
