Atlantic woman wins $50,000 lottery prize

CLIVE, Iowa — A southwest Iowa woman who won $50,000 said the significance of her prize was lost on one member of the household. In a press release from the Iowa Lottery, Kelly McDermott said Tuesday, “I kept trying to tell the dog last night she’s going to have some pretty fancy bones, and she just didn’t understand me.” She claimed her prize at the lottery’s main office in Clive.

McDermott, of Atlantic, won a top prize in the Iowa Lottery’s “Bonus Cash Doubler” scratch game. She bought her winning ticket at Casey’s, 1408 E. Seventh St. in Atlantic, using winnings from a prior winning ticket to make the purchase. She scratched the ticket when she got home and uncovered the game’s second top prize. McDermott said the win brought a sense of relief. She plans to use her winnings to pay bills and pay off her car.”I don’t have to worry about bills anymore,” she said. “I can take care of business and do what I need to do.”
