Atlantic School Board: Wed. evening meeting recap

(Atlantic, IA) – The Atlantic Community School District’s Board of Education held their regular monthly meeting tonight (Wednesday), at the High School. During her report to the Board, Superintendent Dr. Beth Johnsen paid special recognition to Food Service Director Natalie Ritter.

The District’s Director of Finance, Lisa Jones, Wednesday provided the board with an updated financial report, during which she mentioned their are two-months left in the current fiscal year, and that the District received “A large amount of revenues in March,” because that’s when the second-half of property tax payments arrive. She said also the financial picture looks positive at this point in time.

Jones said also, the Nutrition Fund is growing.

The Atlantic School Board approved student fees for the 2026-2027 School Year. The fee schedule is as follows:

The Board then approved their Consent Agenda items, which included action on the resignations (effective June 30th), of:

  • Anna Wieser – HS Secretary
  • Kelli Evans – Director of Nursing
  • Ella Bryant – Custodian
  • Lisa Jones – School Business Official
  • Stacey Schmidt – Director of Student Services.

Other resignations approved by the Board, included: Matthew Best – Summer 2026 Weight Room Coordinator, and Michelle Andersen – Musical Pit Director. The Atlantic School Board also approved the following Recommendations to Hire:

  • Tony Pross – Volunteer JV Baseball Coach (Summer 2026)
  • Montana Applegate – Girls Bowling Coach (Winter 2026) – pending completion of a coaching endorsement.
  • Michael Applegate – Boys Bowling Coach (Winter 2026) – also pending completion of a coaching endorsement.

The Board then approved:

  • An agreement between the District and DCI Group, for drilling and sample soil borings.
  • A 28E Joint Sharing Agreement with the Harlan Community School District for the 2026-27 School Year, to employ Special Education Administrative Associates for 10 districts (including Atlantic, Harlan, IKM-Manning, AHSTW, Nodaway Valley, Tri-Center, Glenwood, Lewis Central and Riverside).
  • An amendment to a Behavioral Master Services Agreement between the Atlantic Community School District, Hazel Health, Inc., and Telehealth Services USA.

At the end of regular business, the Atlantic School Board entered into a Closed Session for an evaluation of Superintendent Dr. Beth Johnson. When they returned to an open session, the Board finalized a one-year contract extension for her, with no salary increase.
