(Atlantic, IA) – The Atlantic School Board held their regular monthly meeting Wed. night (April 8th). Board President Josh McLaren issued the Oath of Office to newly elected Board Member Chase Roller, who won a special election held March 31st.

McLaren spoke about the election and the path forward.
The seat Roller occupies was formerly held by Laura McLean, who, along with her husband has moved to eastern Iowa. Roller is a former probation/parole officer and a high school football/wrestling coach. In other business the Atlantic School Board approved the resignation of Bryce Casey – MS Girls Wrestling Coach, and Recommendations to Hire: Marcy Adamson – 2nd Grade teach for the 2026-27 school year; Brett Johnson – Summer 2026 Mowing; Mandi Brauer – Homebound Instructor; Summer 2026 Volunteer Baseball Coaches; Ashley Young – Summer 2026 MS Softball Coach, and Director of Transportation – Conner Galecki.
A closed session to evaluate Superintendent Dr. Beth Johnsen was postponed until April 22nd, because Johnsen was ill and unable to attend the meeting. During the Action Items portion of the agenda, the Atlantic School Board:
- Passed the second reading of a Board Policy pertaining to Chronic Absenteeism and Truancy.
- Set the date for a Public Hearing on the FY27 Budget, as 6-p.m. on April 22nd.
- Approved an Educational Services Agreement with Iowa Western Community College.
- The Board tabled action on an FY27 Special Education Agreement, because there was insufficient information as to cost and who would fill the role.

The Board approved the addition of Bowling to the 2026-27 Athletic Program, as well as bids for a High School Camera, Trash, Bread and Milk. They also approved a FY27 Science Curriculum quote and recommendation. They tabled FY27 Budget Recommendations and related cuts, until they can make a more informed decision on the facts and figures associated with the loss of 77 students after the certified enrollment numbers were submitted to the State.
