(Atlantic, IA) – A public hearing was held this (Wednesday) evening at the Atlantic High School, with regard to the proposed FY27 Property Tax Levy. No comments were received. Later on in their meeting, the Board passed a Resolution authorizing the issuance of General Obligation School Bonds Series 2026, not to exceed $22.5-million dollars, and the levying of a tax for the payment of the bonds, as well as a related Ahlers and Cooney (Attorney’s) letter.

The Resolution, she says allows the District set-up the debt payments and to spend the money for preliminary expenses.

The Board the moved to approve the FY 27 Property Tax Levy rates, as published.
In other business, the Atlantic School Board approved recommendations to hire:
- Riley Wood, Jr. High Softball Coach for the 2026 Summer season
- Becki Knapp, MS Special Education Teacher for the Fall of 2026
The resignations of: Special Ed Paraeducators Felicity Swanson (effective 4/24), and Karyn Joyce (effective 4/15); Special Ed Teacher Dani Johnson (effective at the end of the school year). The Board approved the following retirements:
- Special Ed Para Ann Simpson (effective at the end of the school year)
- High School Custodian Richard Smith (effective 5/22). and MS Custodian Brian Inknen (effective 6/30).
The Board approved also: an Inter-District Transportation agreement; a Shared 26-27 school year Transportation Director Agreement with the Griswold School District (basically a renewal of the current agreement); a Memorandum Of Understanding with regard to I-Jag for 26-27; and a 26-27 Classified Union Agreement.
The Board tabled until their next meeting, action on approving a shared position 28-E agreement with the Harlan School District. Superintendent Dr. Beth Johnson summarized the position responsibilities…
The Board – in voting unanimously to table the agreement – cited the need for more details, and questions over why the District couldn’t use a qualified person on-staff to serve the role.
