Atlantic Rock Island Society Enterprise (ARISE), a local non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of local history through maintaining buildings and belongings, will be joining the nationwide Operation Green Light for Veterans initiative. ARISE owns and maintains the American Legion Memorial Building (aka: the Armory) in Atlantic. The building is home to the following: the American Legion Post 43, the VFW Post 3415 (including the Honor & Color Guards), the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War & the Civil Air Patrol (CAP). ARISE wants to participate in the Operation Green Light to show our service members they are supported.
Led by the National Association of Counties (NACo) and supported by community organizations nationwide, Operation Green Light is a visible symbol of support and gratitude for the men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. From November 4 through November 11, 2026, ARISE will illuminate the Armory in green and encourage community members to participate. The Cass County Board of Supervisors signed a proclamation at their October 20th meeting, urging residents of Cass County to participate as well. The Cass County Courthouse will “go green” and have a resource table/display on the main floor.
“Transitioning back to civilian life can present immense challenges for service members and their families. Through Operation Green Light, we want to send a clear message to every veteran in our community: you are seen, you are appreciated, and you are not alone,” said Leonard Kinney, ARISE board member.
In addition to lighting the Armory green, the organization invites local residents and businesses to participate by changing at least one light bulb in their home or storefront to a green bulb. Whether it is an exterior porch light or an interior lamp visible from the street, this simple gesture sparks conversations and connects veterans with vital local, state, and federal resources.
