Atlantic Police investigate incident at Schuler Elementary

(Atlantic, IA) – Officials with the Atlantic Police Department, Wednesday afternoon, said the Cass County Communications Center received a report earlier in the day, of an unknown individual outside Schuler Elementary who appeared to be attempting to gain access to the building.

Officers responded and conducted an investigation, which determined the individual was a middle school student who had left their building, altered their clothing, and attempted to reenter Schuler Elementary. The individual did not gain access to the building and left the area prior to officers arriving on scene.

The student was later located during dismissal, and the situation has been addressed. At this time, there is no indication that any threat was made toward staff or students. Out of an abundance of caution, officers remained in the area of the Middle School, Schuler Elementary, and Washington Elementary during dismissal.

The Atlantic Police Department worked closely with the Atlantic Community School District during the investigation and received assistance from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.
